Animal activists free some laboratory chimps whose blood is infected.  28 days later, most of Britain's citizens are murderous psychopaths.  Thanks a bunch, animal activists!

Shot on a relatively low budget, 28 DAYS LATER makes effective use of digital video and precision editing to create its horror sequences.  Like the shower scene in PSYCHO,  the attacks by the "infected" in this film appear to be much more gruesome than they actually are.  The relatively unknown actors (at that time) filling out most of the roles originally added to the realism of this apocalyptic nightmare, though now both Cillian Murphy (BATMAN BEGINS, RED-EYE) and Brendan Gleeson (GANGS OF NEW YORK, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE) are more apt to be immediately identified by movie fans. The film is overlong by at least 20 minutes and none of the multiple ending included on the DVD are entirely satisfactory, but 28 DAYS LATER still holds its own as a classic zombie movie even while it borrows bits and pieces from the entire George Romero NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD series.

P.S. Actor Christopher Eccleston, who played the evil Major Henry West, would become "The Doctor" two years later on the revived Doctor Who series. 3½ - JB
